Regular meetings of the City of San Elizario Council are held on the first and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm at Council Chambers, located at 12710 Church St. The agenda is posted at City Hall and here (link to agendas) at least 72 hours in advance of the meetings.
Civil service is in Mayor Maya Sanchez’s blood. Her grandfather was elected Constable from San Elizario in 1930. She was President of the committee to incorporate San Elizario and is proud to be fifth generation from San Elizario. She was raised in Los Angeles, CA where she was a producer in the advertising industry. She returned to San Elizario in 2010 with a commitment to work towards improving, protecting and promoting her special hometown. In addition to her Mayoral duties, she is Director of Account Planning at Ghostlight Creative in El Paso. 2014 was a big year for her as she turned 40, only to become the first Mayor of the City of San Elizario the very next day and a few months later, married the love of her life. She’s currently in her second term as Mayor which began in May, 2016.
Alderperson Miranda is a fourth generation San Elizarian. She is a retired social services advocate. She was the chair of the finance committee during the successful effort to incorporate San Elizario and her skills in organization and accounting have carried through as she continues to manage a majority of the City of San Elizario’s finances. Her primary goal on Council is to advocate on behalf of the City’s constituents and she participates in continuing education courses to better serve her position. Alderperson Miranda is the proud mother of a teenage daughter, the City of San Elizario’s hardest working, unofficial intern.
Alderman Cantu is an educator with a Masters Degree in Professional Technical Education. He works for the San Elizario Independent School District as a substitute teacher and has been able to introduce the “new city” to many of our young students. He has been a resident of San Elizario for over 40 years and was part of the committee to incorporate San Elizario. Alderman Cantu heads up the Grants Steering Committee, making crucial decisions on which grants to pursue and facilitating the research and work necessary to obtain funding to improve the quality of life for San Elizario residents while at the same time, easing the cost required by the City.
Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Alderperson Najera graduated from Austin High School in 1975. Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and retired in 1997 after 20 years of service, including time served during Desert Storm. From 1997 to 2010, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a Locomotive Engineer. He has been a resident of San Elizario for 15 years and was a member of the committee that incorporated San Elizario in 2013. He is married to Delma Najera and has two sons, a daughter and 12 grandchildren.
As a lifelong resident of San Elizario, Alderperson Martinez-Juarez was taught the ranching lifestyle by her parents and grandparents, who were also residents of San Elizario. She was the chair of the fundraising committee during the incorporation of San Elizario and continues to organize City events. Her community is her passion and she wants to teach her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the same values instilled in her while growing up in San Eli! She works for the San Elizario Independent School District and plans to retire from the school district.
Alderperson Almanzar is a life-long resident of San Elizario. His family has roots in San Elizario dating back to the late 1800’s. He is married to Nora Almanzar and they have three children. Both he and his wife work for the San Elizario Independent School District. He takes pride in representing the City of San Elizario and enjoys giving back to the constituents of this wonderful community. His goal is to see the City progress while maintaining its identity and small town feel.
